  • Q: What are the main differences between I-Series and Apex®?

With the Infinity® I-Series line, Fortress® set out to prove that cost-effective decking could still deliver the strength, usability and beauty of its premium cousins. Made from co-extruded bamboo plastic composite, I-Series boards are 40% lighter but 2x stronger than its competitors. It also offers properties superior to wood, such as being fade, splinter and slip resistant, while still retaining the natural hardwood grain look. Apex® also offers the aesthetics of wood with the strength and benefits of bamboo and PVC. Made from capped bamboo-based PVC composite materials, Apex offers a slightly more premium feel, still at an affordable price. Both are available with industry leading warranties.

  • Q: How do I find pricing for my decking project?

To find pricing for Fortress® decking products for your project, start by contacting your local dealer. You can find the one closest to you by utilizing our Find a Dealer page and searching by your zip code.

  • Q: Why is Fortress decking better than wood?

Fortress® bamboo-based composite decking offers the strength, warmth and vivid colors of wood, with the durability and longevity of composite and recycled materials. Our PVC and HDPE composite boards are also lighter than wood, and are scratch, UV and moisture resistant. And the best part? They’re easier to maintain. Unlike wood, which requires consistent up-keep like sanding or staining, our boards require just water and some dish soap to keep them looking like new for years to come, and also come with industry-leading warranties.

  • Q: Is Fortress decking sustainable?

Both of our Fortress® decking lines: Infinity® co-extruded bamboo-based composite (CBPC) boards and Apex® capped bamboo-based PVC (CBPVC) boards work in harmony with nature. Our decking products are made of 60% bamboo (a fast-growing grass) and 40% recycled plastics. Our boards are manufactured in a facility that utilizes solar power. And over their lifetime, our products are sustainably maintained – since they require no harsh chemicals (like stains or sealants) to keep them looking like new. Just water and dish soap are all it will take to keep your Fortress decking looking great over its lifetime. To learn more about our sustainable products, please review our Sustainability Sheet.

  • Q: If Fortress decking is made from recycled materials, why is it more expensive than wood?

Recycling is expensive! From collecting, to hauling, to making items ready for production, recycled material has become more expensive even than original plastics – as the demand for recycled materials has risen in recent years.

  • Q: How long will my Fortress deck last?

At Fortress®, we’re proud to stand by every product we make. That’s why your Fortress deck is backed by an industry-leading warranty, which even covers fade and stain resistance.

  • Q: What is the lifetime value of Fortress decking?

While traditional decking materials offer no warranty and require regular, costly maintenance, Fortress® bamboo-based PVC and composite decking are covered by industry leading warranties and resist staining, fading and cracking – meaning it requires minimum maintenance at low cost.

  • Q: How do I clean my Fortress deck?

Fortress® deck products are designed with our philosophy of Outdurable Living® in mind, which means that unlike wood, they are easy to care for and stay looking great throughout their lifetime. All you’ll need to maintain your deck is an occasional sweep with soapy water (we recommend dish soap) and a gentle power wash. Our Cleaning & Care Guide provides a few additional details to ensure you get the most out of your Fortress deck.

  • Q: Does Fortress decking fade or change color over time?

No! Unlike natural wood, our Infinity® I-Series and Apex® deck boards are resistant to fading, staining and UV rays, which means their vivid colors and textures will continue to look as good as the day they were installed.

  • Q: Is Fortress decking suitable for commercial settings?

Yes. And all Fortress decking products are covered by a 15-year commercial warranty.

  • Q: How heavy is Fortress decking?

Our Infinity® I-Series and Apex® decking boards are lighter than most other composites, while maintaining the same stiffness and mechanical properties. This makes them easier to handle and install, with 16” spans.

  • Q: Where do I find installation instructions?

You can find installation instructions for Fortress® decking in the Installation Guides section of our website. We’ve also linked directly for Infinity® I-Series and Apex®.

  • Q: Is Fortress decking code compliant?

Both of our Infinity® I-Series and Apex® decking lines are compliant with the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residence Code (IRC). To learn more about Fortress® product code compliance, please visit the Code Testing Reports section of our website.

  • Q: Can I paint or stain my Fortress deck boards?

Fortress® is proud to offer a variety of standard and special order colors for both our Infinity® I-Series and Apex® deck boards, ranging from soft greys to warm taupes to deep, rich browns, all featuring unique grain embossing. Unlike wood, these boards have all been manufactured and treated to resist fading, stains and even insects. As a result, we would not recommend any additional treatment like painting or staining, and in fact doing so would void your Fortress warranty.

  • Q: Can Fortress deck boards be placed over a solid surface?

Fortress® deck boards must be installed with a minimum of 1 ½” between the ground surface and joists to allow for ventilation and drainage.

  • Q: Can Fortress deck boards be glued?

Using glue on a Fortress® deck board are generally ineffective and may damage or discolor the surface of the profile.

  • Q: What kind of deck framing works best with Fortress decking?

Fortress® is proud to offer a complete framing system, as part of our Total Solution of products. Our Evolution steel deck frame uses galvanized steel and has been designed by deck builders, for deck builders. The interlocking joist and ledger system lets you build sturdy, safe decks with less effort, and the powder-coated finish provides resistance against corrosion. Fortress deck boards can also be used on wood frames.

  • Q: Can Fortress deck boards be used for a wheelchair or walker ramp?

Yes! In fact, Fortress boards are a great solution for wheelchair and walker ramps. Since they’re resistant to moisture and rot, they’re less likely to warp or twist – meaning no splinters or nails getting pushed to the surface. They’re also slip-resistant, which means they’ll provide a smooth surface that still has grip.

  • Q: Are Fortress deck boards slippery when wet?

Fortress® deck boards have been designed with slip-resistance in mind. Our boards feature an acrylic resin cap with a “grabby” surface that provides enhanced levels of friction when compared to other decking alternatives. In addition, composite and PVC decking is better at fighting moisture than wood, so will stay clear of mold or mildew, which can contribute to a slick surface. To learn more about slip resistance ratings for our Apex® boards, check out this blog post.

  • Q: Do Fortress deck boards meet California fire code requirements for WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) zones?

    Yes!

  • Q: How much ventilation is required under a deck?

Fortress® requires a minimum of 1 ½” between the round and joists to provide adequate ventilation and drainage.

  • Q: Where can I see images of Fortress decking projects?

To get inspired for your next Fortress® decking project, visit the decking section of our Image Gallery.

Throughout the gallery, you’ll also find images for other Fortress products like railing, fencing, framing, lighting and cladding. • Q: How do I find a contractor in my area?

To find a contractor near you, simply visit our “Find a Fortress® Contractor” page. There, you’ll search by your zip code to find options in your region.

  • Q: Are Fortress deck boards cut exactly to size or are they longer than the rest of the industry?

Slightly longer. The technical lumber/board term is Precision End (sometimes Edge) Trimmed. Our decking and cladding boards are not PET. Other manufacturers extrude significantly faster and resultantly, they have to try to cool their boards faster. The ‘extra’ material is largely a slop factor for the fast extrusion and cooling

Our process is much slower, the line speeds being slower means more cooling happens as a result, so the overage tends to be less.

  • Q: How do I know what framing is best for my project?

Why build a 25-year deck on a wood frame that rots? Our Evolution steel deck framing and stair system is just as easy to install as wood – even on curves. The interlocking joist and ledger system enables you to build sturdy, safe decks with less effort. Designed by deck builders for deck builders, Evolution framing offers greater spans, and its powder coated finish provides increased resistance against corrosion.

  • Q: Why is steel framing better than wood?

Steel framing offers numerous advantages over wood. It’s just as easy to install, and is compatible with all deck boards, but unlike wood, steel delivers straight, uniform pieces engineered for longer spans, and is naturally fire and insect resistant. Fortress® steel framing is also backed by a 25-year warranty and won’t rot or sustain moisture-damage like wood. Steel is also sustainable, which makes it a great option for environmentally conscious builders and homeowners. To learn more about how steel stacks up against wood, visit our website or watch this video.

This space creates an opportunity for top venting, allowing water vapor, exfiltrate and heat to exit upwards by convection, and bottom venting to allow water and condensate to exit downwards by gravity. This prevents water or moisture from being trapped and causing rot and other structural damage. To learn more about rainscreen technology, visit our cladding page.

  • Q: What are the differences between Apex and Infinity cladding boards?

Our Apex® boards are capped bamboo-based PVC composite and are available in two board profiles: grooved and square. Infinity® boards are made of co-extruded bamboo-based HDPE plastic composite, and only available in a square board profile. Both are manufactured to be naturally UV, fade and insect resistant. To learn more about the advantages of each, check out the cladding section of our website.

  • Q: What is the difference between cladding boards and VistaClad?

VistaClad will be launching in 2021, and we look forward to sharing more information at that time.

Fortress® is proud to stand behind everything we make and offers warranties on all our cladding products. Apex® is covered by a 30-year residential and 15-year commercial warranty, and Infinity® is covered by a 25-year residential and 15-year commercial warranty. • Q: What are the benefits of composite & PVC vs. wood?

Our bamboo-based HDPE and PVC composite cladding boards provide the warm aesthetic of wood – but with so much more. Our cladding and deck boards are manufactured to be UV, fade, scratch, splinter, stain and even insect resistant, which means they will look great over their lifetime with no need to seal, sand or stain, and only require water and dish soap to keep them clean. Composite and PVC boards also repel moisture so unlike wood, you’ll never need to worry about rot, mildew or other water damage. And to enhance your peace of mind, they’re backed with industry leading residential and commercial warranties, so you know your investment will go the distance.

  • Q: Can cladding be installed vertically or horizontally?

Yes! Cladding can be installed vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and can even be used in curved applications, making these boards a truly versatile product.

  • Q: Can cladding be used in soffits or ceilings?

    Yes!

  • Q: Where can I find installation instructions?

Installation instructions for our cladding board can be found on our Installation Guides page. You can also access them here for Apex® and here for Infinity®.

  • Q: What tools will I need to install my Fortress cladding?

Fortress® cladding can be installed using standard tools and labor. To learn more, check out our Installation Guides for Apex® and Infinity®.

  • Q: What fasteners should I use with my Fortress cladding?

We recommend using our HULK fasteners™ for both our Apex® and Infinity® cladding boards. For Apex grooved boards, you can choose to use HULK hidden fasteners for a fully seamless look. (A Fortress exclusive!)

  • Q: Will my cladding boards fade or change color over time?

No! Unlike natural wood, our Apex® and Infinity® bamboo-based composite cladding boards are resistant to fading, staining and UV rays, which means their vivid colors and textures will continue to look as good as the day they were installed.

  • Q: Can I paint or stain my cladding boards?

Fortress® is proud to offer a variety of standard and special order colors for both our Apex® and Infinity® cladding boards, ranging from soft greys to warm taupes to deep, rich browns, all featuring unique grain embossing. Unlike wood, these boards have all been manufactured and treated to resist fading, stains and even insects. As a result, we would not recommend any additional treatment like painting or staining, and in fact doing so would void your Fortress warranty.

  • Q: How do I clean and maintain my cladding boards?

Fortress® cladding products are designed with our philosophy of Outdurable Living® in mind, which means that unlike wood, they are easy to care for and stay looking great throughout their lifetime. All you’ll need to maintain the boards is an occasional power wash with soapy water (we recommend dish soap). Our Cleaning & Care Guide provides a few additional details to ensure you get the most out of your Fortress cladding.

  • Q: Is there required spacing for rafters or purlins?

There is no required spacing for rafters or purlins. The most common spacing is going to be 12” On Center and 16” On Center but it is required. This can be changed based on customer’s desired aesthetics.

  • Q: Can I hang a swing from my pergola?

Our pergolas are not tested for moving force, so we do not recommend it. You can have your own engineer certify the swing. Your engineer will need to consult local codes and might recommend burying posts in this application.

  • Q: Does the Evolution Steel Pergola come in other colors? Can I paint it a different color?

Evolution Steel is currently only available in Black Sand. The Black Sand powder coat makes it low maintenance and resistant to the elements, so we do not recommend painting it.

  • Q: Can I use other products in addition to Evolution Steel?

Yes! Our bracketry is compatible with wood and composites. The designs are limitless! We recommend using a 1” Panhead Wood Screw when connecting with wood which will need to be purchased separately.

  • Q: Does Fortress have requirements for footings or foundations?

The installer must consult local building codes to determine the footing or foundation specification, as it varies so much by jurisdiction such as location, frost line, type of soil, etc. and there are just so many variables.

  • Q: How long will it take to install my pergola? How difficult is it to install?

The installation time will vary depending on your pergola size and design. We recommend at least 3 people for building and to review the connection-based installation instructions on the website.  Regarding level of difficulty, our evolution steel pergola would be no different than a traditional wood pergola.

  • Q: Can I add a solid roof to my pergola?

When adding any third-party attachments, you will need to work with your own engineer for approval. A solid roof can add additional weight load due to rain/snow or possible wind uplift to the pergola.  We are not liable for any third-party attachments and voids the product warranty.

  • Q: How big can I make my pergola?

As big as you want! Just remember that our joists span 20’ and when connecting two joists there needs to be a post for support.

  • Q: Can I really span my joist 20’ with rafters without sagging?

Yes! With 16” OC rafter, the 20’ joist has a deflection at the center of 1/16” at 20ft that would not be noticeable to the eye.

  • Q: Does my pergola need a permit?

Check your local building codes. Some localities may require them. It is more common to require a permit for commercial applications, but size and location of the pergola will determine if one is needed.

  • Q: Do Evolution Steel Pergolas have wind ratings?

We do not have a wind rating on our pergolas. Our pergolas are made from the same material as Evolution Steel Frame meaning they are much stronger than they need to be as decks are walked on. However, we cannot guarantee that there will not be damage from high winds, hurricanes, and storms.
